Registration is required for ALL children who will be participating in 2010-2011 Children's Ministry programs.

Please stop by the tables in The Gathering Place on Sunday to register your child(ren) for any of the following programs:

Kids Summer Water Fight: Monday, July 19

We're having it out with the sunshine this summer on Monday, July 19 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Palmer Park. Meet in the grass field adjacent to the playground at N Academy and Maizeland.

This is an afternoon of fun for all kids grades kindergarten through 5th grade.

Bring your FILLED water balloons, water guns, and water squirters. And don't forget a towel! You may also bring a picnic lunch for when we take a break.

We'll provide extra water for refills! After the water fight, we'll dry off by playing at the playground.

Hanging With My Family: June 25, 2010

Families are invited to bring their preschool to elementary-age children and a family blanket to Hanging With My Family for an indoor picnic on Friday, June 25 at 6:00 p.m. in the West Campus. We'll make dinner for you!

Afterwards, enjoy a fun, fast-paced playtime with kids' games, prizes, and crafts! It'll be a night your family will be smiling about for days.

This is a great opportunity to invite young friends to Pulpit Rock!

AWANA Parent News: December 9

Wednesday, December 9, will be our last AWANA meeting for the fall semester. We are doing a few things:

1. We will be reading the Christmas story together out of Luke.

2. Singing Christmas carols.

3. Clubbers may bring some items for the Street Church, so we can help others in need this holiday season. These are some items they could use for MEN:

coats
hats
gloves
long underwear
blankets
sleeping bags
backpacks
socks
hand warmers
trial sizes of personal care items such as toothpaste, soap, hand sanitizer, deodorant, etc.

All items (with the exception of socks and personal care items) can be gently used.

4. We are also collecting canned goods for Northern Churches Care.

This Wednesday is also Store Night, so please remind your clubbers to bring their AWANA Bucks; there will be items they can buy as presents for family members.

If you need to pay for the Fall semester or have items you have purchased and not paid for, please see Caitlin or Molly at the registration table outside of the balcony.

Illness Prevention in the Nursery

We are well into “sick season,” and we wanted to assure you that we take the health of your children very seriously. We would like to take the time to update you on the precautions we take to ensure that we remain as sanitary an environment as possible. If we work together, we believe we are able to provide a safe, clean nursery for your little ones.

Our responsibilities:

We have committed to sanitizing our entire play areas, eating areas, and diapering/toileting areas with a product called DZ-7. This neutral disinfectant cleaner was thoughtfully chosen because it has no active ingredients that are harmful to children. It is sensitive to viruses, including the H1N1 virus. This is a recent change from the DMQ product we have used for years, specifically because of DZ-7’s ability to target H1N1.
We have a policy of glove use, hand washing, and sanitization after every diaper change. Diaper changing is only done by a paid staff member.
All blankets, bedding, and spit cloths are machine washed after each use. We also hand or machine wash any toys we have seen put into a child’s mouth.
We keep hand sanitizer at our check in counter, in our kitchen, and in every room.
We are vigilant about asking parents to retrieve an obviously ill child.

Your responsibility: Please keep any child who is exhibiting an illness home with you for the day. If your child has had a fever or has had vomiting or diarrhea, please be sure these symptoms have not been present for 48 hours prior to leaving your child in the nursery. If your child is being treated with antibiotics, please be sure they have been in your child’s system for at least 48 hours before bringing them to the nursery.

Kingdom Kids and Extreme Year-end Wrap Up

Two families have really put their hands and hearts into a ministry that has brought a lot of joy and purpose to kids.

Debbie and Peter Van Wirt, with daughters Zoe and Stephanie, and Charlie and Brenda Lane with sons Chip and Craig, worked with the PRC2 Puppet Ministry for 4 years. Peter and Charlie did technical things like rigging up black lights for the glow-in- the-dark fuzzy dancing puppets and helping wire sound equipment and staging, as well as moving equipment when the troupe went offsite to competitions in Denver. Debbie and Brenda did everything from teaching choreography and puppetry technique to costuming and set design. If it needed to be done, these families did it!

“They brought a lot of enthusiasm and creativity that completed the leadership team. That aspect will be missed as much as the four puppeteers that went with the families’ participation.” Frank Hammitt, founder and leader of the PRC2 team said.

The 5th graders of Pulpit Rock Church graduated into the Middle School ministry Sunday during the first Extreme 5th grade graduation ceremony. Proud parents were introduced by their graduates (surprisingly, many parents of 5th graders had the same names, “Mom and Dad”) and the graduates were challenged by Sandy Ramsey to let Jesus be their compass in the journey ahead.

Mark Tuggle welcomed them into the Middle School ministry with a full schedule of fun summer activities beginning next weekend with their introduction to the Middle School class at 9:30 in Room 115. Then after being presented with their own compass, the graduates were prayed for and released to enjoy the many delicious snacks provided by the 4th and 5th grade parents.

Children’s Ministry and Kingdom Kids will miss our beloved 5th graders and we wish them the best in the exciting years to come.

Fruits of the Spirit Stickies
Write the characteristics of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control on sticky notes or blank address labels you can get at an office supply store. Have them handy at home or as you’re out and about. Explain to your kids that God wants them to “put on” these characteristics. Shelley’s note: For toddlers, maybe draw some pictures that show that trait.

During the day, look for examples of your kids living these characteristics out–even the smallest efforts should be rewarded. For example: when you see them being kind to a sibling, go to them and put a sticky note on their clothing with that characteristic written on it. Say specific words of affirmation, “I’m glad to see you waiting patiently for your turn. You were showing self-control.”

Silly Putty Influence
Items needed: Silly Putty and newspaper (cartoons are best)
Knead the Silly Putty, press it down on the newspaper page, and then lift it off to see the comic’s mirror image on the putty. Stretch the putty out to distort the image if you like. Be aware that some newspapers use soy-based inks, which do not transfer the images as well.

Ask:
• How did the image get on the Silly Putty? (It had to be pressed onto it and rubbed in.)
• How is this like you being influenced by others? (Their good or bad habits can rub off on you. If your friends use bad words, you may pick up that habit. If your friends are kind to others, you may learn that habit from them as well.)
• What are your friends influencing you to do?

Read Proverbs 13:20—‘He that walks with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”

Do as I do…not as I say

I am still smiling! We had such great response to “Hanging with my Family.” Almost 250 parents and kids came for a fun family night of food, games and prizes. Kid’s asked me at the end of the event, “When can we do this again?” “I wish you lived at my house so we could do fun things like this all the time.” Parents responded positively to the family devotional games. “Thanks for giving us tools to continue teaching our kids about God at home.”

But one of the highlights of the event for me was personally living out Psalm 78:5, “...He commanded the fathers to teach their children….” Passing on our faith is the responsibility of every parent. It is so easy to “tell” my kids what they should do- to tell them to serve God. But part of passing on our faith is modeling to our kids and inviting them to “do as we do”- to serve as we serve.

My mom did this well for me. She was actively involved in children’s ministry all her life. She made sure I did not just “tag along” with her. She made sure I served with her. I have tried to do the same with my girls. I was so honored to have my daughter Kristin serve with me and help me direct “Hanging with My Family.” Kristin teaches 5th grade at Explorer Elementary. The two of us planned together, prayed together, shared ideas. She learned from me and I learned from her.

Kristin:
Ever since I was a little girl, I loved doing things with my mother. My mom and I are very different when it comes to planning things and doing things certain ways. BUT, at the end of the day, we have the same focus….God. This event was not about us, it was about us working together to help families learn about how to have fun with each other and how to learn about God. That is the best reward being able to work with my mom….because we are a part of something much bigger than ourselves! For this event I was able to bring fresh, new ideas to the table and she brought wisdom and experience. We each had something to use for the greater good. I think kids need to not just watch their parents do things, I think they need to be involved.

Bonnie:
Where do you serve? Are your children a part of what you do? Do you praise them for their involvement with you? Do you help them see God’s approval for their service? Your children will not learn how to serve by just watching you. They will learn how to serve by serving with you.
There is a family in our church who model this so well. Gary and Alice Brunette and their children, Matthew, Abby, and Megan serve in so many ways at this church. And they are always doing it together. At “Hanging with My Family” they were serving as one team. You may want to talk to them to get ideas about serving as a family. You can find the family hanging out at the Children’s Ministry registration center on Sunday mornings.

Summer family worship is back!!

As a result of our survey at the end of last summer, it was obvious parents loved the family worship time together. So, for 9 weeks, starting July 5th through the end of August, all elementary children will join their families in the worship services.

We realize the greatest environment for a child to experience corporate worship is in a corporate worship setting. So, for these 9 weeks in the summer, we are asking our children to worship with their parents so that parents may model worship to their children. We are allowing ourselves to imagine this corporate worship service where our kids are sensing the spirit of God as they observe and participate worshipping with adults. It will be an atmosphere where our children will experience being a valued member of the bigger church family.

I believe there is a great benefit to families worshipping together. In the OT, parents included their children in the Passover so they could ask their parents, “What does this ceremony mean to you?”

When the Israelites celebrated the Passover according to God’s instructions, they brought their children with them so that during the Passover feast the children would be able to ask: “What does this ceremony mean to you?” Ex. 12:25-27.

I hope your child will look at you in a worship service and ask, “What does this mean to you?”
So, how do you help your child worship?

We will set up a Kids Worship Center in the main auditorium where your child will be able to pick up his own worship activity sheets (to help him participate during the service), pencils, and offering envelopes. Family activities will be included for you to follow up at home.
Included in your child’s packet will be the verse for the week. If your child memorizes the verse, you may sign the tear off and your child may return it for a prize!

This would not be a time for children to just “sit” with you. It will be a training time where you can help your child open his Bible, whisper prayers with him during prayer time, explain difficult words in songs that are sung, make sure he has an offering…

What if you are here for both hours on a Sunday morning?
A class for elementary children will be available in room 203. It is only for children whose parents are serving in another ministry or are in adult community class for a 2nd hour.
What about bringing pre school children into the family worship?

The child sensitive parts of worship in the family worship service are designed for elementary children. The nursery and pre-school will continue their regular programs during the summer.
It is my prayer that each child, who learns best by imitation, will learn the joy of worship as he enters this experience with his parent.

Summer Serving Opportunities

Preschool
The Preschoolers will be learning, playing and creating this summer just as they always are, but the rooms will be consolidated. The Giraffe and worship room are being transformed to office space. All 4's will be in the Frog room, all 3's in the Duck room and the 2's will be split as usual, per appropriate staffing. Kingdom Kids
With Summer Family Worship coming up in July, we have a great opportunity for an individual or a couple to serve. Kingdom Kids volunteers will provide fun for the children whose parents are serving or in an adult community class. We would like to have 4 shepherds for both the 9:30 and the 11:00 service hours. Awana Wrap Up

We had 30 kids in Cubbies, 75 in Sparks, and 35 in T&T. Our kids gave multiple bags of clothes, blankets, coats, etc. to the Street ministry along with several boxes of food, and toiletry supplies to NCC. The kids also gave $140 to our Adopt-a-Club in the Philippines and gave more than 100 of their Awana bucks. When we did our Adopt-a-Clubber event at church this year, our congregation gave $370 which translated to nine scholarships for neighbor kids who wanted to join on their own! Awana is one of the Children’s Ministry’s biggest outreach programs.

Playtime in the Park! May 5th to August 4th

Mommies (and Daddies) of children of all ages come join us every Tuesday from 10-12 noon at George Fellows Park (behind East Library) for a fun time of fellowship and play dates. If you have kids, there is a great playground, sand, grass areas, etc. for them play. If you don’t have kids or yours is just a little one, come anyways and hang out, maybe push a toddler on a swing to give a mom a break! The park is easiest to get to if you take Vickers to Tuckerman and turn south to 5711 Tuckerman. Look for Kathy McDaniel, Amy Crum, or Andrea Oberosler and get to know other moms and women in the church. The Pikes perk at Union and Montebello (next to School Crossings) is offering a 10% discount if you mention you are headed to/from Playtime in the Park, so grab an ice tea and join us!

Meet our new Small Group Leader for Kingdom Kids, Jaime Swope!

Jaime and her husband Wayne have been attending Pulpit Rock for 11 years. Jaime, a teacher for all ages, has worked in the nursery 8 years, ran the preschool program for Tuesday morning Bible Study for 5 years and coordinated crafts for AWANA cubbies for three years. When Ericka Meyer’s departure from the Small Group Leader opened, Jaime thought it would be a perfect fit for her because she knows she will be involved in Kingdom Kids for at least the next 6 years. Plus, she loves working with the children as well as their parents all of whom she knows very well. Jaime is currently finishing her bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Development and may open a preschool of her own some day. Her children, Zeb (8), Paige (6) and Allie (4) can attest to their love for her. Look for their responses on the Children’s Poll.

Bonnie's Notes: Who invited the Easter Bunny?

What would you do if you walked into church on Sunday and saw the Easter Bunny sitting in the front row? Maybe you would feel like I do when I see Santa kneeling at the manger. But the truth is, Santa IS a part of my Christmas and the Easter Bunny IS a part of my Easter.

The truth is, Easter can be a time of confusion for children as they get the secular and biblical aspects of the Easter celebration confused. How do we help our children enjoy the fantasy figures of these holidays while deeply experiencing the truth of the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus? How do we help them understand the true meaning of Easter?

Children will mirror what you model to them. Pay attention to what words come out of your mouth. What do these phrases make you think Easter is about?

“We need to get a new dress/pants and shoes for Easter. You will love wearing new clothes to church.” (Suggestion: To keep the attention off the clothes, my mom had us wear our Easter outfits the week before Easter.)

“You need to get to bed early because the Easter bunny is coming in the morning.” (Suggestion: “You need to get to bed early so we can get up early to celebrate that Jesus is alive.”)

And then there are those conversations that take place in the car on the way to church that go something like this: “Fix your hair. Keep your new shoes clean. No more Easter candy until after church. Be ready to leave church right after the service because the ham is in the oven/we have a reservation for dinner at noon...”

May I suggest the following while you are in the car on the way to church Easter morning:

· Let your child know that you are excited about what he/she will experience at the “Jesus is Alive” celebration that will take place in his/her classroom that morning.

· Teach your child an Easter tradition. People in the front of the car say “Christ is risen.” People in the back seat respond, “Christ is risen indeed.”

· Have family members finish this phrase “Because Jesus is alive….” (Examples: I will live with Him forever; He hears my prayers; He protects me.)

· Have someone pray in the car giving thanks that Jesus is alive!

· As you drive into the parking lot, say with enthusiasm, “Are you ready? Let’s go celebrate that Jesus is alive!”

Enjoy the Easter bunny, the candy, the colored eggs, the new clothes, the Easter dinner, but let your conversation be filled with the excitement of the risen Savior. As your own heart is focused on the joy of a risen Savior, your kids will catch your heart and celebrate the risen Savior with you.

May your family experience a blessed Easter.

Our beloved Ericka Meyer, in charge of the small group ministry of Kingdom Kids is resigning. She and her husband Jimmy have an opportunity to be part of another church led by a good friend and mentor to they Meyers. Ericka parts from us, saying, “It has been my privilege to serve alongside an amazing team of Shepherds, volunteers, and Children’s Ministry Leaders.”

Children’s Ministries is currently looking for someone to fill the small group ministry position. This is a 10-hour per week, paid position. Do you know what the compelling of the Holy Spirit feels like? (Acts 20:27) Being compelled by the Spirit is saying, “I have to do this--I cannot NOT do this.”

That is how I feel about Children's Ministry at PRC. I cannot NOT be committed to the next generation. Children are receptive to Jesus, and I love watching life transformation take place before my eyes. I cannot imagine being at church and not being with kids.

I’m not the only one who feels this way. Here is what some of our staff and parents say about being compelled to serve in our Children’s Ministry:

What is a “d6” family?

Bonnie: I love d6family.
Sandy: The what family?
Bonnie: Oh, d6family.com.
Sandy: What does d6 stand for?
Bonne: It’s all about parents connecting with their kids spiritually. Parents want to be involved in the spiritual development of their kid’s lives--they just don’t know how. That’s where d6 comes in.
Sandy: Okay, but what is d6?
Bonnie: It’s the answer to the 168 weekly hours of a child’s life. We may have a child in Children’s Ministry up to four hours a week. But what spiritual training is going on the other 164 hours?
Sandy: And that’s where d6 comes in?
Bonnie: Exactly!
Sandy: But what does d6 stand for?
Bonnie: It’s what we have been doing at PRC for years. It’s our Parent Driven program.
Sandy: Now that I know about. Parents learn how to train their children spiritually by being involved with their kids in the learning experience at church. But will you tell me what d6 is?
Bonnie: Sandy, think about it. d6. We talk about it all the time!
Sandy: What we talk about is parents volunteering in their child’s classroom on Sunday where they learn what their child can understand spiritually; they learn how to follow up at home; they learn how to model the importance of church to their kids; they learn--
Bonnie: --how to do d6! And the best part of d6family are Splinks--a SIMPLE way to LINK a family together spiritually. They're creative ways of interacting with children using family devotional starters. They help create teachable moments to pass along spiritual truths and life lessons--and it’s just fun.

Spending an Extreme Sunday

What do those kids do in Extreme, anyway? Is it just a nicely decorated room where the kids can draw with chalk, play fooze ball and lounge on pillows? Or, is it a more mature class setting than Kingdom Kids, because they don’t have to sit behind the kindergarteners?

Well, when this reporter decided to break this story, I slipped in to observe the 11:00 class taught, this week, by Brenda White. She had two other adults helping her, Jared Harp and Kelly Rudd. I assumed they were for mob control. What I found was pretty interesting because the day’s focus, the Bible, was supported by several activities that seemed like regular school work. The spelling section was a game where each child was given a letter and asked to work together to spell out words like wisdom, advice, hope, and insight (a particularly tricky one). After each word, Mrs. White asked them where they would find such things. Typical answers were “parents, a teacher, the Bible.” Here, I could tell Mrs. White must not only know creative approaches to the lesson, but also how to deflect typical 4th and 5th grade boy responses like, “I would ask a baker!”

Next was the math section where they had to find the ratios of boys and girls who brought their Bibles. What they found was 1/3 of the girls and 5/14 of the boys brought theirs. Who won? Another tricky question: The girls. You may want to get out your calculators to verify this.

Next, science! They looked at soil samples and discussed farming techniques while reading the parable of the Sower in Mark 4:1-8. And finally art, where they did a 3 dimensional mural of the different types of soil discussed.

So, is all this creativity wasted on these energetic and easily distracted minds? Not at all. Brenda says that many classes have a small group component where the children will sit down and discuss deeper issues. Jessie, one of the students, says, “I am responsible for my relationship with God. I pray and read my Bible.” Another student, Jared, admits, ”I need to work harder to occupy more of my time with church and school and learning more about God.”

What’s more is that the boys are going to have a Friday night social some time this month and the girls need someone to head one for them as well. Think about getting involved because this is a very worthwhile ministry.

A nursery poem for parents

The moral of this little tale
Is very quickly said:
Mary could have saved a lot of pain
With just one day in bed.

Parents, this “one day in bed” could be a Sunday for you son or daughter. Please consider the other children exposed to you child because they could catch the illness.

Try these fun activities with your preschooler

You may have noticed the yellow pages that come with the weekly work of art your little one crafted. It’s called a Parent Page and it is simply packed with information and activities. One box is a simple activity you can do with little to no preparation like reading a bible story with your child or praying with him. One box generally had an activity that may require a little prep work like writing get well cards for sick people or making some thing out of colorful paper. The last box encourages you and your child to memorize the verse they learned in class. So, if you want a quick and easy way to do some activities without having to look any up in a book, look to your preschoolers take home pages and save them in a notebook for future use!

God’s Family Birthday Party

One thing we all have in common: we will all have a birthday this year. I love listening to children talk about their birthday parties, their favorite gifts, games they played. Children love to celebrate the day they were born into their families.

God talks about another birthday--a spiritual birthday--the day when we enter into His family and become His children.

“But to all who believed Him and accepted Him, He gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn--not with a physical birth...but a birth that comes from God.” John 1:12, 13 (NLT)

When a child makes a decision to follow Christ, he is given a spiritual birthday. He begins a new life as a member of God’s family.

No doubt your child is already thinking about his birthday party this year, wondering which friends to invite or gifts he may want. As a parent, you will want to celebrate the day he was born into your family with a day of rejoicing. Your child will be reminded of your love and acceptance of him.

We believe it is important to also celebrate the day your child is born into God’s family. It is also a day of rejoicing. Your child is reminded of God’s love and acceptance him.

Every January, Children’s Ministry has a party for children who have become Christ followers the previous year. If your child made a decision to become a Christ follower sometime during 2008, we would love to have both you and your child attend our event "God’s Family Birthday Party" on January 18.

We will celebrate your child’s spiritual birthday by talking about what his eternity will look like in Heaven. We will do fun activities and crafts that remind us how we should live now that we are Christ followers. And of course, what is a birthday party without cake and ice cream?
You and your child can experience this celebration together. We even have a special invitation for you to invite him to this day of rejoicing over his entrance into God's family. Stop by the Children's Ministry registration counter (upstairs by the main office) for one of these invitations. Then come and delight in the birthdays of God's children!

Kingdom Kids has gone Mad!

Whats brewing in the beaker in Kingdom Kids? You’ll have to ask the Mad Scientist! We certainly hope that nothing explodes during the worship hours on Sundays in January. But if you happen to hear anything, don’t leave your seats, we will have fire extinguishers at the ready! The kids will be linking this interesting lesson to 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” Boy, it just makes the mind wander to think of the application a Mad Scientist could make to that!

Parents are invited to help out any time to view these great lessons and help out the Shepherds.

The Preschoolers are exploring the ABC’s of the Bible. In January, they will be doing the letters F, G, H, I, J, K, L. What in the world could those stand for? Drop by your kids class some time and find out! The kids sing songs, listen to stories, play games and do crafts that all center around the letter of the week.

We need help! The 11:00 hour of worship is the biggest area of need, especially in the 2 year old room. Also needed is a committed storyteller for that hour. (My tip: get a couple of puppets to tell your story and the kids will be mesmerized!).

Nursery Outreach

We bet you didn’t know that your little ones, who may not even be crawling, could do an outreach! Well, you’d be right, but the workers and the Nursery Director can organize one in their names! It’s the annual Socks for Tots project where we will be collecting tiny little socks for cold, tiny feet. Last year, we collected 150 pairs. Then, we asked the preschoolers who come on Tuesdays to help us to put them in cute little bags and decorate them with stickers. The whole package goes to Life Network for their Pregnancy Center. If you would like to donate, simply drop off new socks at the Nursery counter any time (Tuesdays or Sundays) between January 20 and February 10. Thank you for being a part of this Nursery Outreach tradition.

Through this surprise, a group of kids learn that Jesus is the reason for the season and the reason that each of us can truly have a WONDERFUL LIFE!

Wednesday, December 10 is a very special, and busy, night at Awana! This will be our last club meeting before Christmas and we are inviting parents to come celebrate. Starting at 7:15, we will gather to sing carols and read the Christmas story. Each year at Christmas time our Awana clubbers bring items to donate. This year we will be collecting for the Street Church and Northern Churches Care. For the Street Church, items that are needed include any clothes to keep someone warm, lots and lots of socks, hand warmers (you can buy them at Wal-mart), blankets, sleeping bags, sanitary items like little shampoos, soap, tooth-paste, and deodorant. Many of these things can be gently used items that you no longer have a need for. For Northern Churches Care we will be collecting canned food and boxed dinners. Clubbers will get a chance to donate their items while we sing carols.
December 10 will also be Store Night, so make sure your Sparky or T&T clubber brings their Awana Bucks to spend

Christmas Traditions

I love Christmas traditions! Through the years, our family has enjoyed several of our own. For example, it’s against house rules to listen to Christmas music until after Thanksgiving (a rule we always seem to be breaking). Almond Roca is the must have Christmas cookie we bake. We celebrate the advent wreath on the Sundays of December. We have a strict rule that there shall be absolutely no peeking under the tree (except for me).
When it comes to Christmas tree traditions, we all sit quietly (making no comments) as Steve untangles the lights and wraps them around the pine branches. Then we turn on Bing Crosby Christmas music as we each hang our favorite ornaments--maybe in our favorite Christmas socks. We finish by sitting before the tree with hot cocoa.
On Christmas Eve night, Steve eats the cookies left for Santa and leaves a thank you note on the cookie plate. Christmas day, we light sparklers, which is a leftover tradition from our years in Colombia. We always read the Christmas story before we open presents.
For several years, each member of our family had a Christmas journal. As we reflected on the Christmas story during December, we would write our thoughts and insights about God’s gift of Jesus to us. We would share our journals with each other. It was a time of Christmas worship together. Of all our family traditions, I like this one the best. I love when we worship together as a family.
Here are some great resources for times of worship with your family. They would make great Christmas gifts for your kids!
Hands-on devotionals like “God & Me: Devotions for Girls" and "Gotta Have God: Fun Devotions for Boys,” both by Legacy Press, include Bible stories, questions, prayers, and great activity pages in separate, age-based volumes (ages 2-5, 6-9, 10-12).
“My First Message: a Devotional Bible for Kids” by Eugene H. Peterson targets ages 4-8 with artwork from former Disney animators, Rob Corley and Tom Bancroft. It is based on four key elements: Reading the Bible, thinking about what it means, praying in response to what it says, and living out the truth.
“My First Message Bible Search: Discovering Answers in God's Word" by Jon Nappa helps children ages 6-10 find scriptures that talk about sadness, anger, fear, and obedience.
For an easy-start family devotional, try “Step into the Bible: 100 Bible Stories for Family Devotions” by Ruth Graham. This bright, colorful devotional includes a Bible reading, questions to answer, and a verse to memorize.
If you're looking for a daily devotional, the “Adventure Bible Book of Devotions (NIV)” from Zonderkidz is a 365-day devotional book for children ages 9-12. This study goes along with the Adventure Bible.
Audio devotionals work great for those families on the go to practices, lessons, the store, etc. “Bible Eyewitness Hall of Faith” from Adventures in Odyssey offers 12 audio episodes featuring the Bible’s greatest heroes.
There is always room for one more tradition. Perhaps this Christmas your desire is to include a time together with your family to worship Jesus the Savior. Remember, family worship is a tradition that can last all year!

The PRC Squared puppets will be doing a special Christmas performances for the preschoolers and Kingdom Kids at the MPV. All kids will start in their regular classrooms and be taken over. Adults welcome to see it , too!

Extreme Gets Crum-my Teachers

Meet Bob Crum. He says he has the worst last name in all recorded history... it is a verifiable fact. Look it up. His kids are Garrett (11 years old, lego master and lord of trivial Star Wars knowledge), Maddie (9 years old, drama queen and art prodigy) and Obie (1 year and change... huge and opinionated). PRC has had Crums for about a year and are proud of it. Read on for some Crum Q and A…

Why did you want to be a teaching team?
I want to be a part of the teaching team because I feel like I need to give back to the Church. My wife and I also have a passion for teaching kids in a way that interests them while remaining true to the message of the Gospel. The secret to working with kids is to be "big kids" on your own... Amy and I love staying connected to youth... and being really goofy.

What would you say is your teaching style?
Chaos. In all seriousness, I am loud and energetic. Amy is the person that brings order to my chaos. We make a great team. She ensures that the message is strong and clear as it can get lost in my zeal for energetic relationship. We use a lot of visual examples coupled with games that teach something... AND we do some goofy stuff without any purpose whatsoever.

What is the focus of your teaching? What are the kids learning?
I want kids to learn that the Bible is the REAL word of God and not just some list of rules that is meant to keep us in line because God is a cosmic killjoy. The Gospel is Good News for a reason! We have an eternal hope based on a God that came near to us and wants to be with us FOREVER... I believe that a Sunday meeting without the Salvation message (in some form) is a missed opportunity.

What have you personally learned from your teaching experience?
Every time we teach we learn some new facet of God's character. I often find myself taking away from the preparation time a new sense of purpose or a conviction to change my behavior in some way. I am not ashamed to say that I learn from kids.

Any special units in the future?
Future units for us revolve around the curriculum. We try to make each one memorable so you never know what will happen on Sunday morning. We encourage everyone within earshot to pray for our inspiration as well as the inspiration of all other teachers and helpers- God's strength works more apparently through our weakness.

This past month, the Kingdom Kids have been doing a unit on missions with guest chefs Big Mama and Chef Gordon Bleu. Their key verse is John 4:34, “My food, says Jesus is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.” Besides one teaching the children that “A little bit of butter and a little bit of sugar makes everything taste better” and the other one being French, they want the children to learn the lesson of the THUMB. Each letter stands for a different area of missions: Tribal, Hindu, Unreached, Muslim and Buddhist. The children watch as the chefs prepare a marvelous meal out of a mysterious oven and what they can do to be missionaries themselves. One Sunday, they were asked to offer up the missionaries around the world in prayer. The following is what they have prayed for:

“Please help the missionaries to have water and food and cars to get around. And teach that God is special.” Paige, Kindergarten.
“That the missionaries have the right tools to spread the word of God!” Annika.
“That the people would stop worshipping idols and start worshiping God. We should give the missionaries $100,000!” Teresia, 1st grade

“That we should give them the Bible because they would know about God.” Kaylee, 1st grade.
“That the people who are serving do not get hurt.” Tanner, 2nd Grade.
“Keep up the good work.” Calvin, 3rd grade.
“That the missionaries can show them the right God to pray to.” Avery
“Help the missionaries learn the languages.” Rebecca, 2nd Grade.
“God, throw the bible on the other side of the world so the people can read it.” Preston, Kindergarten
“That the people would be able to get a Bible and read it.” Joshua.
“That the missionaries will be healthy, strong and happy about spreading the word of God.” Emma
“I would like them to learn that cows are only animals. It’s silly to pray to cows instead of God.”
“That we get to go help the kids in New Orleans.” Brady, 2nd grade.
“That the people will not believe all kinds of weird things that aren’t true.” Abby, 3rd Grade.
“The missionaries would tell them about Jesus Christ and they would believe.” Bethany, 3rd Grade.

Worship is for Kids (Summer worship survey results)

Last month, we asked parents of our elementary kids to take a quick survey about their Summer Family Worship experience. We had 65 responses. When asked if we should do this again:
62 said "yes"
2 said "neutral"
1 said "no"

We wanted to share some of the valuable comments we received from survey participants.
"Just being together was a great experience; our child saw how we worship and what we do in service."
"The kids loved the music and watching what happens in big church. It made for great conversations over lunch. They have learned to have more self control and respect. Children will do what is modeled for them; seeing parents worship with reverence for God, prayer, and song leaves an imprint on their hearts. We have decided to make this the norm for our family. We worship together, then go to our Sunday school classes later."

"The focus to help families worship WITH their own children is imperative to the children catching the value of worship."

Daddy, Am I Going to Heaven?

"Daddy, how do I get to Heaven?"

"Mom, if I lie, does that mean I'm not going to Heaven?"

"Is cheating a sin?"

"Can I ever be so bad that God will never forgive me?"

Are these the kinds of questions your child is asking? If they are, this is good! Questions like these indicate your child is coming to grips with his sinful nature and how his sin affects his eternity in Heaven.

I hope you welcome these questions. You have the opportunity to help your child understand that he can never do enough good to go to Heaven. That's why God sent His son Jesus to take care of your child's sin.

Yes, Jesus did the work to provide forgiveness for your child's sin. But your child needs to respond to the forgiveness Jesus offers to your child.

How do you help your child respond to Jesus?

Your child is living in a culture teaching that there are many ways to Heaven. It is important that your child hears what God says about this and in His words in the Bible.

Here are three ABC-steps to explain to your child what God says about His love, His forgiveness, and His promise for eternal life in Heaven:

A - Admit that I am a sinner and that the result of my sin is death (Romans 3:23 & 6:23).

B - Believe that Jesus loves me and died for my sin (John 3:16).

C - Confess my sin and receive Jesus (1 John 1:9; John 1:12).

If your child expresses to you a desire to ask Jesus to forgive his sins, walk through the "ABC" and read the Bible verses with him. It is important to read from your Bible as you talk with your child so he understands that this is what God says, not just your views on forgiveness. Pray with him as he makes the most important decision of his life.

In our Preschool, preschool-age children experience creative learning activities (music, Bible stories, prayer) designed to introduce them to their Savior, Jesus. Children are divided by age into small groups, where they can experience community through play.

We have several positions open for paid staff and of course, we are always open to welcoming volunteers, to help keep our church family's preschoolers happy and safe.

EMPLOYMENT DETAILS:

The month of October has a lot to offer our little clubbers. The cubbies will continue to play games, make crafts and earn a patch by the end of the month. If you’ve ever seen game time with Mr. Tommy, you’d be amazed at the sense of control he is teaching these little ones.
For the Sparks, remember that October is Missionary Month where we will be collecting funds for Awana Missionaries. Oct 8 is store night where the kids can purchase something with their hard-earned bucks, October 15 is fall break which means no club and when we come back, a special all club assembly with Treasure Night. ARGH!

What's Cookin' in Kingdom Kids? October is brimming with a flavorful look at the 5 main people groups of the world that hunger for the Gospel of Christ. We'll meet two "famous" TV chefs, who will guide them into a tasty understanding of the verse "My food is to do the will of Him who sent me." Kids will sample foreign foods and have fun seeing how their THUMB can help them remember those who need the good news.

Teach Your Child to Pray

When prayer is a natural part of your day-to-day routine, your kids learn the value of going to God with little things as well as the big things.

Help your kids see things around them as visual aids to prompt prayer. If you’re driving and see an ambulance speeding down the street, ask your kids to pray for the person being treated.
Pray in a conversational way. Instead of saying a formal prayer at meals and bedtime, speak to God as a friend. Use simple, conversational language. Kids will think, I can do that. They will be more likely to talk to God in their own way.
Use Bible verses. Have your kids ever said, “I don’t know what to say when I pray?” Show them verses that will give them ideas. For example, if they’re having a hard time in math, they can use Philippians 4:13 to jump-start their conversation with God.

“Lord, thank You that I can do all things (even cleaning my messes) because You give me strength.”

Starting September 3rd from 6:15 to 7:45, Awana is for kids ages 3 (potty trained or with parent) to 5th grade. You can register the first night if you haven’t already. Caitlin Garrett, our fearless Commander has a lot planned for each age group. Cubbies will be doing crafts, stories and games every night and the older kids have special events lined up for the year like Box Car night, a Beach Night in the Winter, and the mysterious Treasure Night coming in October. Families can enjoy Pizza Nights on the first Wednesday before club starts. Combine all this with some valuable lessons about Jesus and Bible verse memorization, and you have a fantastic time. Please come and consider helping in your kid’s class because we have some great needs.

Fourth and fifth graders will now be together in one big room where worship, a message, activities and breakouts will happen in one place. Upon entering, kids can’t help but be excited about the new look with exciting designs on the walls, bean bags and pillows on the floor, a mini pool table, chalk boards on the walls and a Karoke Machine! All elements will work together to support the focus of creating a unique community of kids who will learn about relating to and praying for each other.
September’s unit will be on success and how God measures it versus the way we do.
We want to welcome the teaching teams Bob and Amy Crum with Brenda White, Bob and Julie Smithouser with Mary Hopper and a few guest appearances with Molly Thompson. It’s going to be a great year!

Kingdom Kids: Everything new.

As if a total makeover to all the rooms wasn’t enough, the elementary kids have a lot to look forward to this year. Live music, drama, activities and fresh, new breakout rooms are just part of the picture. Kids can look forward to the same format of starting upstairs in a classroom, coming downstairs for worship and message time and breaking out with their shepherds to do more in -depth discussions and fun activities. In September, they will be studying a unit on Kings in the Bible starting with Saul, moving on to David, and Solomon and ending with Jesus.
To give you a sneak peak into October, they will be doing a new unit on Missions with a new guest personality!

The Preschool program: where parents get their hands in the Play Doh.

The Preschool program will continue what they started this summer with the ABC’s of the Bible. What does each letter stand for? You’ll have to find out, but I did get Preschool Director Toni Smith to reveal that A is for Adam and M is for Moses. The whole Sunday’s activities will center around the letter for that week in the way of age-appropriate games, songs, stories and crafts (which, Toni says will be more detailed and, well, crafty than the past.) Parent volunteers will be really involved with each phase, and according to Toni, may be asked to do some active play games with children like playing a character of the Bible.
As if that weren’t enough, coming soon the preschoolers will be sponsoring a Compassion International child with their offerings.
It looks to be a very fun and educational year for our young ones.

PRC Nursery, a safe and wonderful place to be.

At the PRC Nursery, the volunteers and staff work hard to play with and love on the children. The focus for teachers is to help the children recognize Jesus’ name and to associate it with his love. Also, they want them to learn that Church is a safe, and wonderful place to be. Last year, one toddler exclaimed on entering her room, ” Look, I’m going to play with my friends!”
All this love and comfort must be working because our numbers are growing. So, there are many openings for paid staff and volunteers. See Mary Pollard or Sarah Tinan about these.
